MDIS Spotlight: Shidiq Alkaff and His Krump Dance Adventure

It was 6 years ago that Syed Shidiq Alkaff aka Scribblez, a 25-year-old student from Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) , found what he loved.

"Krump," Scribblez said, “ is when we have this thing called storytelling and it’s kind of obvious.”

Yes, it's Krump Dance.

He also added that the basics of Krump, which includes chest pops (an upward chest motion), stomps, and jabs (similar to a forward closed fist punch), are free to be interpreted by the dancer. This is why freestyle, or improvised dance routine, is very common in Krump dancing.

His love of the dance is not limited to his understanding of the art form. From Korea, Japan, and Indonesia to Malaysia, Scribblez have roamed all over Asia to battle fellow enthusiasts. There is one competition, however, that struck a chord within him.

It was last year when Scribblez went all the way through the quarterfinal of the competition in Sabah, Malaysia. The organizers, who did not have time to continue it until the finals, decided to change the rules to “7 to Smoke”, in which eight dancers have to win up to seven 45-second battles (a victory is worth one point) in in order to win.

Despite the sudden change, Scribblez was up for the challenge. So when it was his turns, Scribblez won five battles back to back until he lost his lead. On the second cycle, he won another point. “It was tiring as hell. My muscles were dangling,” he said as he chuckles lightly.

The most memorable part, said Shidiq, is when one of the judges, better known as 1K, said the following:

"Bro, You have one more point. Are you ready to win?"

"Yes I'll win it."

As he uttered his last words, he went on to use his last burst of energy and won the entire championship. "I cried after I won. It hits you. You feel good after letting it go, but you can still feel the aftermath. It was just crazy," said Scribblez in an excited tone.

Now, Shidiq occupies his time with his activities in Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) . His other passion, film making, is done within the Media Club inside MDIS .

"If you want to talk about having a bright future, I would follow Mass communication," said Scribblez as he ends his words with an amusing smile.
