Dancing the night away!

“Let’s go, we’re super late,” I said as my friends and I rushed to get ready for our very first Prom Night on September 7, 2018. Only a few hours ago we were running around the MDIS TV Studio, looking for glue to put up a signboard at the entrance of the corridor. We spent the past few days going around Singapore, shopping for decorative items and craft materials to help our vision turn into reality. Blue and white lights on the ceiling, silver mesh cloth along the black curtains of the studio and silver foil balloons displaying “PROM” in the centre. The set up felt like it was taken straight out of a Disney movie. It was much like a fairytale.

The idea of organising a Prom Night came about as I looked around at people working with constant passion and dedication towards the growth of MDIS School Of Media and Communication’s Media Hub. It was time to unwind and to celebrate what we had achieved as a result of our unending determination. It was time to bid farewell to some of our most prominent members and say hello to the new ones. It was time to dress, laugh, connect and reconnect, sing, dance, appreciate, dine, enjoy, click some crazy pictures, cherish our memories together and to create little magical moments we will never forget.

The signboard saying “Memory Lane,” was ultimately stabilized at the foot of the entrance door. It pointed down the corridor which echoed the very theme of the event, Memories. The walls of the corridor were covered in black chart papers with a bunch of pictures, familiar phrases, iconic moments and lots of glitter. We walked down, our smile widening with every step as if we were looking at the wall for the first time. It was like walking through an archive of old conversations and unforgettable experiences.

A buffet was arranged at the end of the hallway for everyone to feast on. The menu ranged from Vegetarian Mee Hoon to Fried Chicken Wings and Thai Pineapple Fried Rice to Marble Cake. The food was absolutely delightful and served as an instant energiser for the dance floor that awaited everyone’s presence and participation. Before dancing the night away, Mr. Fuadi Rahmat awarded deserving and consistent members of the club with certificates of appreciation. The event also served as an instrumental platform to announce the upcoming President, Vice-President, Unit Heads and Vice-Heads of the club. The room was filled with enormous cheers and synchronised claps.

40 friends, singing at the top of their lungs as they move and groove to the music, creating a new memory to be added to the bunch. Media Hub’s Prom 2018 was the first that was ever organised. Not only did it set a benchmark for all the future events but also provided an opportunity to help the members of our club feel special and significant. Everyone had contributed, in one way or another, to make Prom 2018 possible. It was a night full of cool dance moves, unfiltered laughter's, good music, lip smacking food and love, lots of love. It was a night full of magic.

As the night eventually came to an end, it was time to say goodbye. We gathered around to take a group photograph and two or three boomerangs. A few shed tears, a few clicked pictures, a few were probably in denial and the rest munched on the leftovers. Everything felt so surreal. Only a month ago, my friends and I were running around the streets of Mumbai, India to find our perfect prom dresses and here we are today, working on our Graduation Projects 10 days after Prom. Prom had come to an end. I cannot help but smile as I think about how, on the night of Prom, I whispered underneath my breath, “mission accomplished.”
