The 12 Hour Photography Competition

Organized on June 22nd 2019, The 12 hour Photography Competition, was the first ever photography competition conducted by MDIS Media Hub. We were asked by the school to organize a well planned competition. The idea of organizing a photography competition came from Media Hub’s President and Vice President, Gina Qu Shiying and Aditi Srivastava. As they were brainstorming for various competition that can be conducted, it occurred to them that a photography competition would be most ideal to organize as our school has never had a photography competition before. We have taken part and won prizes in various short film competitions and other film making competitions but we never had an opportunity to participate or conduct a photography event before.

When Gina and Aditi presented us the idea, we all agreed upon it to be exciting.

The challenge now was to organize the event successfully. It was decided that it will be a 12 hour photography competition and it would be held in June. The competition was to begin at 12 noon and end at midnight so that the participants will have 12 hours to click pictures, edit and send them.

Organizing the competition helped us make a proper budget and plan out the things that needed to be done before the competition. As me, Aditi and Gina had to leave for Oklahoma for our residency program, Jane with constant support from Media Hub Studio Officer Mr. Danial worked on promoting and spreading the details of the competition. The first post was uploaded on Media Hub Instagram page and Facebook profile giving out the details of the competition. The competition was open to both local and international participants and had two categories, Category A for participants from 14-18 years old and Category B for participants from 19-23 years old. All those who were interested could link in to bio to register. Following the first post in April, a number of other posts were uploaded to call for action and as a reminder of the competition.

With one month left for the competition, prizes for the winners were announced. First prize being Go Pro, second prize Instax Mini and third prize Gold Class movie vouchers. Emails were also sent out to the registered participants, informing them about the competition and the briefing event that was to be conducted on the morning of the competition.

On the day of the competition, walk in registration was open and briefing event was conducted to inform all the participants about the rules of the competition and to reveal the theme. The briefing and theme reveal was on Instagram live for informing international participants.

At 11.59, with pride and gleam in our eyes we waited eagerly for the theme reveal, and at 12.00 noon sharp the competition had officially begun with the theme for Category A being 'Urban' and theme for Category B being 'Psychedelic'.

As we stood there wishing all the participants good luck for the competition, we were proud as all our hard works finally payed off. The First Photography Competition had begun setting a benchmark for further competitions to come.

Cheers to all those who helped make this a great event !
