The traditional Chinese Animal zodiac or commonly known as “Shengxiao” is a repetitive cycle of zodiac animals used to represent every year, each having its own symbol and meaning. Different zodiac animal represent the lunar-solar Chinese calendar. Back in 2017, it was the Year of the Rooster. As we finally approach a New Year, another zodiac animal represents a New Year and in 2018, the Chinese warmly welcome the Year of the Dog. Did you know that each zodiac animal symbolizes different quality traits? 11th position in the traditional Chinese calendar, The Dog symbolizes traits such as loyalty, compatibility and kindness. Commonly dubbed as “Man’s best friend”, The Dog often lends a shoulder in times of dire need, providing warmth and comfort to every Man. Despite being perceived by many for being too nosy as they are often portrayed as intruding the lives of others, Dogs are actually deeply involved in the lives of those they genuinely care for as they want to ensure that happiness is achieved. Unlike the usual New Year in which the clock strikes at midnight on every 31st December, The Chinese Community celebrates its new year on the 16th of February as it marks the beginning of a new year according to the traditional Chinese Lunar calendar. The 16 day long festival ends with the Spring Lantern Festival that traditionally falls in March.
