Located in downtown core of Singapore, the National Gallery Singapore is an exquisite art gallery showcasing modern and contemporary art from the 19th century to the present day. The gallery provides a phenomenal and significant experience to all its visitors.

The current highlight of the gallery is “Between Worlds” displaying, for the first time ever, the extraordinary art collection and creations of Indonesian Painter, Raden Saleh and Filipino Painter, Juan Luna. The aim of this exhibit is to illuminate wider socio-political contexts of Europe and Southeast Asia during the era of great innovation and change.

Visitors from all over Singapore and other Asian countries were spotted appreciating the exceptional masterpieces. Among the visitors was a little girl, 9, exploring the gallery with your mother. She was fascinated by the details of the paintings and aspires to become a successful artist in the future. Her mother, on the other hand, was intrigued by the painting ‘Le Bereau’ meaning ‘The Cradle’ by Berthe Morisot. The painting shows a mother watching over baby with an expression that was ambiguous. The visitor question is whether the painting actually demonstrated the mother was the nanny. The painting is unique and let the visitor thinking if it represented maternal feeling, fatigue or impatience. For some of the other visitors, this was the first time that they visited the gallery and described the experience as “an eye-opener.” Most of them would love to visit the gallery again soon.

Each painting in the gallery had a mystical depth and looked like they were all narrating a story. The artworks are an inspiration to all the aspiring artists and a thought provoker for all those people who failed to appreciate art in the past. The interiors of the building are highly aesthetic and pleasing. The colours of the wall contrasted with the paintings in a beautiful fashion.

The National Gallery thus, for me, is not an art gallery but an experience that is distinctive and beyond imagination.
